Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Batam?

We found no confirmed, operating Bitcoin ATM in Batam, and no directory we saw lists one. Being near Singapore does not mean there is a machine. Nationally no public machine is proven to be running, so the route remains an OJK-licensed app funded in rupiah.

Can I pay in Batam with crypto or Singapore dollars?

Crypto may not be used as a means of payment: Bank Indonesia says the rupiah is the only legal means of payment under Law 7/2011. On paying in Singapore dollars inside Indonesia, we did not research the exceptions and suggest asking a lawyer. The safe way to pay is rupiah or QRIS.

How much cash can I carry through Batam's ports?

Cash and equivalent payment instruments worth Rp100 million or more carried into or out of Indonesian customs territory must be declared to Customs under PMK 100/2018. Can I use a Singapore exchange from Batam?

Is it safe to swap SGD for USDT at a shop or individual in Batam?

We found no verified shop and cannot recommend any. Foreign-exchange dealing by non-banks is regulated by Bank Indonesia and requires a KUPVA BB licence. Offers to swap cash for USDT outside that carry risks of fraud, counterfeit notes and violent crime. Check a money changer's licence on BI's list before exchanging.

Does Batam have a crypto OTC desk?

We found no physical OTC desk in Batam. Licensed platforms' OTC desks in Jakarta serve clients through online consultation and bank transfer, with minimums from one September 2025 report between Rp50 million at Reku and Rp500 million to Rp1 billion at Indodax, and about US$10,000 at Tokocrypto. Location does not matter.

Buy Crypto in Batam: Next to Singapore, Different Rules

Batam is the Indonesian city closest to Singapore: about 20 kilometres across the strait, and only 6 kilometres at the nearest point of its islands. The temptation to think "next to Singapore's crypto market, it must be easy" is natural, but the reality is duller. We could not confirm a Bitcoin ATM, cash counter or physical OTC desk in Batam. The lawful, protected route for Batam residents is the same as in any other city: an app licensed by OJK, an e-KTP and rupiah from your own account. What is distinctive about Batam is what surrounds that: cash that crosses the water, two currencies and two regulatory regimes. That is where caution pays off most.

Not legal or tax advice

Batam in numbers: a border city

According to Wikipedia, Batam has an estimated 1,296,960 residents (mid-2025) and is run as a free-trade and industrial zone through the Batam Industrial Development Authority, created by Presidential Decree 41/1973. Shipbuilding and electronics are important industries on the island, and Hang Nadim Airport is described as having the longest runway in Indonesia. Several ferry terminals (Batam Centre, Harbour Bay, Sekupang, Nongsapura, Waterfront City) connect to HarbourFront and Tanah Merah in Singapore. The 2026 city minimum wage is Rp5,357,982 (Batam Pos), up 7.38 percent from Rp4,989,600 and the highest in the Riau Islands.

The flow of people is distinctive too. Foreign visits to the Riau Islands over 2025 reached 2,027,037, up 21.59 percent from 1,667,081 in 2024, the highest in six years according to BPS Kepri (ANTARA). In July 2025 Singaporeans accounted for 44.98 percent of 158,043 visits, and Batam was the entry point for 78.16 percent of all arrivals (ANTARA Kepri). In other words, a lot of people cross every day with money and a phone in their pocket. We found no crypto-investor count specific to Batam or the Riau Islands, so we make no claim about local interest.

Three kinds of money at one port

In Batam you can run into three things that often get blurred: rupiah, Singapore dollars and crypto. The law treats them differently.

The rupiah is the lawful means of payment in Indonesia. Bank Indonesia's press release of 13 January 2018 states that crypto may not be used as a means of payment, citing Law 7/2011 on Currency. That means paying a shop, hotel or ferry in Bitcoin or USDT is not lawful. Holding and trading through OJK-licensed traders is allowed; spending is not. On using Singapore dollars inside Indonesian territory, we did not research the exceptions and will not guess. For lawful digital cross-border payment there is cross-border QRIS, including with Singapore. In February 2025 BI Kepri pushed its use because many Singaporean and Malaysian visitors carry large amounts of cash, while QRIS lets them pay from their home bank account with automatic currency conversion.

Crypto, in other words, is lawful only as an asset you buy and sell through a licensed trader and then cash out to rupiah. The legal framework is explained in the guide on whether crypto is legal.

Cash that crosses the water: the Customs rule

This is the part that trips people up most in Batam. Cash and other payment instruments worth Rp100 million or more carried into or out of Indonesian customs territory must be declared to Customs, under PMK 100/2018. Failing to declare carries an administrative penalty of 10 percent of the amount carried. A real case happened in Batam: in April 2025 a resident carrying SGD 17,000 (about Rp213.8 million) from Singapore to Harbour Bay port without declaring was fined Rp21.91 million (ANTARA Kepri). Arrivals declare through Customs' e-CD (electronic customs declaration), while departing travellers fill in a cash-carrying form. We are quoting press reports, not the official Customs page, so check the current threshold on the Customs website before you travel.

The link to crypto: if you sell crypto on an overseas platform, take cash out in Singapore and bring it home by ferry, this reporting threshold applies and is easy to exceed. Buying crypto from Batam: practical steps

From your side as a Batam resident, nothing differs from Jakarta.

Have your e-KTP and a bank account in your own name ready. Licensed apps do not take cash directly; Pintu states that cash deposits via a teller are not available.
Register on an OJK-licensed app and verify your e-KTP with a selfie. Pintu says 10 minutes to 24 hours if submitted between 08:00 and 23:59 WIB.
Top up rupiah by virtual account or QRIS from your own account. At Pintu and Reku the VA platform fee is Rp0, while QRIS is about 0.7 percent at Indodax and Reku and 2 percent at Tokocrypto.
Buy in the instant mode; Pintu's minimum purchase is Rp11,000.

If you earn in SGD, the cleanest way is to convert to rupiah through an official channel and buy from a rupiah account, rather than carrying cash across the border. For large sums, OTC desks run by licensed platforms work through online consultation and bank transfer, so Batam's location is no obstacle. The Singapore side: what MAS says

It is natural for people in Batam to picture Singapore's exchanges. We do not review Singaporean platforms one by one, but there is one regulatory fact worth knowing. On 6 June 2025 the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) clarified that digital token service providers serving only customers outside Singapore need a licence from 30 June 2025, and that it will generally not issue one because of money-laundering risk and the difficulty of supervision. Providers serving customers in Singapore are already regulated and nothing changes for them. In other words, Singapore's regime is built around customers in Singapore, not around serving Indonesian residents from there.

For you in Batam the consequence is practical. Overseas platforms, whether in Singapore or elsewhere, are not OJK-licensed and give no OJK consumer protection. OJK named Binance, KuCoin, OKX, MEXC and Coinbase among platforms it acted against (reported August 2026). Selling through a foreign platform carries 1 percent final tax rather than the 0.21 percent of a domestic platform, per the PMK 50/2025 rules. Money changers in Batam and offers to "swap to USDT"

A border city is full of money changers. Foreign-exchange dealing by non-banks is regulated by Bank Indonesia (KUPVA BB), which publishes a list of licensed institutions. In Bali, BI has said licensed changers display a BI certificate, a registered name and a QR-coded logo; the same checking pattern is useful in Batam, although we did not check a single money changer there. We also found no shop in Batam that accepts USDT or Bitcoin for cash, and recommend none.

A lesson from elsewhere: in Bali, documented cases show the real risk of swapping USDT for cash delivered to an address, including an attempted robbery on 27 July 2025 and kidnappings of crypto holders. We found no comparable documented incident in Batam, which is no guarantee of safety; it is a general warning. OJK education in Batam

This year OJK itself chose Batam for a media gathering on crypto: OJK's North Sumatra office held it from 29 April to 1 May 2026, and an OJK official stressed that only assets on OJK's whitelist may be traded domestically while reminding that high returns always come with high risk (GoSumut, 2 May 2026). The event included no region-specific statistics, but its message fits this page: use the whitelist, distrust promises of profit and avoid unlicensed intermediaries.

Other cities

Batam shares an island-and-trade character with Medan, but its story differs because of the border. In short: closeness to Singapore changes nothing for a Batam buyer except to add risk. Stay on the licensed rupiah route, declare cash that passes the Customs threshold, check a money changer's licence, and do not assume that a service "across the water" applies to you.
