Buy Bitcoin in Yogyakarta on a student budget

Yogyakarta has no Bitcoin ATM we can confirm, and that does not matter: the sensible way to buy Bitcoin in Jogja is the same as anywhere in Indonesia. You sign up with an app that is licensed by OJK, verify your e-KTP, top up rupiah from your own bank account through a virtual account or QRIS, and buy. What is particular to Yogyakarta is who is doing it: lots of boarding-house students living on a monthly allowance. So the real question is not "where is the machine" but "what does it actually cost if I start with Rp50,000". This page answers that, with the arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Yogyakarta?

We found no confirmed, operating Bitcoin ATM in Yogyakarta, and no directory we could see lists one there. Nationally there is no public machine proven to be running either. The practical route is an OJK-licensed app funded with rupiah from a bank account or QRIS.

How much do I need to start buying Bitcoin in Jogja?

Pintu sets a Rp11,000 minimum per purchase and a Rp50,000 minimum deposit. Indodax LITE mode and Reku accept deposits from Rp10,000. Bitcoin is divisible, so you never need a whole coin. These are figures and can change, so check the official fee pages before you deposit.

Can a student top up with a parent's bank account?

It is not advised and Pintu does not accept it: its FAQ says deposits must come from an account in your own name, with no third-party accounts. So have the allowance land in your account first, then top up from there. Students with an e-KTP can register on their own.

Can an e-KTP from outside Yogyakarta be used to verify?

Yes. The verification pages we read ask for an e-KTP and a selfie, and we found no domicile requirement tied to a province. Pintu does not accept a passport or driving licence from Indonesian citizens. Review takes 10 minutes to 24 hours if you submit between 08:00 and 23:59 WIB.

QRIS or virtual account: which is cheaper for small top-ups?

Virtual accounts are usually cheaper: Pintu and Reku charge nothing themselves, Indodax charges Rp1,665 to Rp3,330 depending on the bank. QRIS is about 0.7 percent at Indodax and Reku and 2 percent at Tokocrypto. On a Rp100,000 top-up, 0.7 percent is Rp700. Figures.

Can I spend the crypto I buy in Yogyakarta on Malioboro?

No. Bank Indonesia says the rupiah is the only legal means of payment and crypto may not be used to pay. You may hold and trade it through OJK-licensed traders, then sell into rupiah and pay with rupiah or QRIS.

Is there tax on selling small amounts of crypto?

Sales through a licensed domestic trader carry final income tax (PPh 22) of 0.21 percent, withheld by the platform, and there is no VAT on the purchase. Selling Rp500,000 costs about Rp1,050. Through a foreign platform the rate is 1 percent. Details are in our tax guide.
